We spent today exploring downtown Anchorage. After sleeping in and having a late breakfast, we drove downtown and went to the mall and many small shops. We spent quite a bit of time in a used bookstore but didn't buy anything since we have so many books to read at home.
After downtown we went to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and hiked along the bay. This trail is over 16 miles long and runs along the edge of town through some wooded areas and beautiful scenery. It was a nice day so there were a lot of other bikers and walkers out on the trail. We walked right along the edge of the airport so there were also planes taking off over our heads, but it wasn't too distracting.

As we were walking we saw a large bird fly overhead and land in a tree in front of us. It turned out to be a bald eagle. If we hadn't seen it flying we probably would have walked right by it.
Day 5: Wednesday, June 27
We got up early to go get our rental car at the airport, then headed out to Jeff Yarman and Beth Cender's "Homestead" south of Copper Center. We drove the Glenn Highway from Anchorage to Glennallen, then south on the Richardson Highway about 30 miles, then east on the Edgerton Highway about 10 miles to their house. The scenery on the Glenn Highway was amazing, especially the first 100 miles. Mountains and valleys and glaciers and long views of nothing but wilderness. We took time to stop at most of the scenic overlooks since we knew we wouldn't on the way back.

We arrived at Jeff and Beth's mid-afternoon and were greeted by Krista Kaufman, Beth's niece who is living and working with them for several months. Jeff and Beth were out in the field baling hay and I went out and helped for awhile after we got settled in.
