The last two days have been filled with lots of fun and relaxing. Monday we went with Heather high up in the mountains north of Palmer to Hatcher Pass and the Independence Mine Historical Area. It was a beautiful area and the history was very interesting. There were a lot of remaining buildings to look at and lots of information to ready. We were there several hours We had a picnic lunch up there and then drove up a little higher up to Summit Lake, a small lake in one of the higher valleys. There was even still some ice on this lake and quite a bit of snow in this area.
Today Denise and I went into downtown Anchorage and explored and went shopping. We shopped for several hours and then drove to Earthquake Park, still in town but the site of some of the major damage from a 1964 earthquake. Basically some of the ground just fell into the water and about 50 homes were lost. This was along the Tony Knowles coastal trail, a very cool bike/hiking path which we hiked for several miles. It was very close to the Anchorage airport so we saw and heard large planes go overhead about every five minutes. We also saw a bald eagle along the trail and got several good pictures. Tonight we hung out at Heather and Jason's house and took a quick trip to the grocery store in preparation for our travels tomorrow.
Tomorrow we will drive the Glenn Highway all the way to Glennallen, then go on the Richardson and Edgerton Highway to get to Jeff and Beth's house. It will be over 200 miles but very beautiful scenery from what I have heard. On this next part of the trip we will have no internet access, and Jeff and Beth's house has no running water and the only electricity is with solar. Should be an interesting experience!
It sounds like it is hot and humid back in Indiana. We had a beautiful sunny day here in Anchorage with temps in the low 70s.
